What is manual therapy?

Manual therapy is a method of physiotherapy that uses manual techniques to treat muscles, joints and tissues to reduce pain, improve range of motion and restore functional ability.

Manual therapists are not chiropractors!

Manual therapists are usually trained in anatomy, biomechanics and movement therapy, and use specific techniques such as manipulation, mobilisation and tissue stretching to treat illness, injury or pain. It is widely used to treat sports injuries, spinal problems, joint pain and other orthopaedic or rheumatological conditions.

It is important to note that manual therapy is individualised and usually involves several treatments, and results are gradual over time. Cooperation and communication between therapist and patient are essential for successful treatment.

How does a manual therapy treatment work?

A manual therapy treatment usually consists of the following steps:

  1. Patient assessment and evaluation: firstly, the therapist will usually thoroughly review the patient’s complaints, as well as their medical condition and any previous injuries or treatments. This helps to establish the causes of the problems and the direction of treatment.
  2. Goal setting: the therapist and the patient together define the goals of the treatment. This may be to relieve pain, improve range of motion, restore functional ability or other specific goals.
  3. Treatment plan design: the therapist will design an individual treatment plan for the patient, taking into account the information obtained during the assessment and the goals.
  4. Use of manual techniques: During the treatment, the therapist uses different manual techniques such as manipulation (quick and short movements), mobilisation (slow and gradual movements), tissue stretching and other specific therapeutic holds. These techniques help to relieve pain, increase range of motion and improve functional abilities.
  5. Exercises and advice: the therapist will usually recommend exercises and home activities to the patient to support the effectiveness of the treatment and improve their health. In addition, he or she may give advice on correct posture, movement mechanics and other health considerations.
  6. Follow-up and assessment: during treatment, the therapist will regularly review the patient’s condition and modify the treatment plan if necessary to achieve optimal results.
